Bill J. Davis
A Memorial Service celebrating the life of Bill J. Davis will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, July 2 at Couch Chapel/ First United Methodist Church Shreveport.
Born December 28, 1922 in Haynesville, Louisiana, to Connie Dendy Davis and Albert Leon Davis. Bill’s educational foundation inspired a love of athletics (including football, basketball, golf and dance); an appreciation of literature and music (the French Horn was his favorite instrument); and, a zest for learning. He was privileged to attend the first Louisiana Boys State. At Louisiana Tech, he excelled academically and was active in student organizations.
In 1942 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and continued his education in the V-12 program at LA Tech graduating with honors in 1944. Commissioned as an Ensign after Midshipman School at Cornell University, he was assigned to the U.S.S PGM 22 (a mine destruction vessel for American minesweeps) involved in the naval occupation of Japan in 1945. While serving as the Executive Officer of the ship, he was promoted to Lieutenant JG. After an honorable discharge, Bill returned home to coach and teach school for the next 10 years in Arcadia, Winnfield, Bossier City and Jena.
In 1956, Bill became Principal of Plain Dealing High School followed by various Bossier Parish School System positions. He authored Title 3 grants and became Director of the Northwest LA Supplementary Education Center; a computer center serving schools in a 12 Parish area.
Bill enjoyed playing golf at Palmetto Country Club; singing and traveling with the First United Methodist Church Chancel Choir; and, quality time with his grandchildren.
Retiring from his career in education, Bill worked for New York Life Insurance; served as Executive Director – Bossier Chamber of Commerce; and, Executive Director – Bossier Council on Aging.
Preceded in death by his parents and brother Coleman Davis, he is survived by his wife of 66 years, Joyce Dunford Davis; sons: Todd D. Davis (Lori Wright – wife), Thad D. Davis and Tim D. Davis (Anne Gibbs – wife); grandchildren: Bradley, Taylor, Carly, Calvin, Kristen and KloeAnna.
Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church Shreveport or donor’s choice.
