Susan G. Komen North Louisiana has announced its outstanding volunteers and awarded grant money to local organizations.
Volunteer awards were presented to Susan Shofner, PhD – Volunteer of the Year; and Haughton High School – Partner of the Year.
Grants totaling $222,904 will be offered to health organizations for breast cancer related programs in North Louisiana. A small grants program for innovative breast health educational programs and breast cancer survivor support is also funded by the local Affiliate.
The 2016-2017 Community Grants recipients are the Martin Luther King Health Center, Partners in Wellness – LSUHSC-S/FWCC and St. Luke’s Episcopal Mobile Medical Ministry. Current small grants recipients are CHRISTUS Cancer Treatment Center (gas transportation cards), CHRISTUS Health Shreveport-Bossier (monthly breast cancer support group), C. Wright Pink Ribbon Project (temporary financial assistance) and Feist-Weiller Cancer Center (gas transportation cards).
Donations from the NWLA Komen Race for the Cure this past September along with other fundraising events and individual donors made this funding possible. Volunteers make those events possible, as well as breast cancer awareness educational events.
“Our visibility in North Louisiana is growing,” said Kelley Matkins, Mission Coordinator at Komen North Louisiana. “Susan G. Komen is so much more than just a pink ribbon and more than just a race. It would be impossible to do this work without these volunteers and organizations to educate women about early detection and provide free mammograms, as well as support for breast cancer patients.”
