Huey Dee Hines
BOSSIER CITY – Graveside services for Huey Dee Hines will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 28, 2016, at Rose-Neath Cemetery in Bossier Parish. The Rev. Ed Baswell will officiate, with remarks by the Hines family’s longtime minister and friend, the Rev. Jimmy Eppinette. Mr. Hines, 85, died on May 11, 2016. He suffered from Parkinson’s disease, but his mind was clear and he faced the effects of that disease with dignity and grace. He was born on August 5, 1930, in Friendship, Louisiana, the son of DeWitt and Lois Hines and the second of eight children. He graduated from Friendship School and then joined the U.S. Air Force.
After his discharge, he moved to Shreveport, where he got a job at the telephone company. It was there that he met the woman he would marry: Joyce Terry. They married in July 1953. She called him “Hines” the day they met and every day for the next six decades. They were married for 62 years, made a life together and raised a family. The light of his life, she died six months ago.
Hines worked at the telephone company for 35 years before he retired. He then went to work at Schumpert Medical Center before retiring a second time. After retirement, he enjoyed genealogical research, reading and day trips with friends.
Until he was well into his 70s, he designed, built and repaired things — whether it was climbing onto the steep roof of his daughter’s home to repair the chimney or reinforcing a fence line that withstood the remnants of Hurricane Rita while every cedar fence around it toppled.
Hines was preceded in death by his parents; three of his brothers; and his nephew, Michael Terry, whom he and his wife treated like one of their own children.
He is survived by his daughter, Susan O’Neal, and her husband, John; and his son, Gary, and his wife, Pam.
No life is truly complete without family and friends. The Hineses had incredibly good friends over the years who helped make their lives fuller. His family would like to particularly thank three couples who did so much for him in his later years: Louise and Bob Bell, Charles and Margaret McGaha, and Secil and Linda Skinner.
