Jewel Martin Murray of Bossier City, LA passed away peacefully on Sunday August 6, 2017. Jewel was born in Ringgold, LA to parents Sarah Pate and Redrick Martin.

Jewel was a great basketball player and a majorette in the band before graduating from Ringgold High School. She went on to get her RN Certification from Northwestern State University. Jewel was a Head Nurse for many years before retiring. Upon retirement she went on to work for Bossier Parish Schools as a para at Plantation Park Elementary. During this time she was awarded the honor of “Most Exceptional Paraprofessional”.

Jewel had a lifetime love for the art of dance. She loved it for its beauty but felt it was a discipline that would last forever. She was an accomplished ballroom dancer. Jewel helped to start the local chapter of USA Dance and served on its board for many years. She was an advisor for the Bossier High School Dance line for many years and enjoyed seeing members of the group later becoming involved in dance groups in area Schools. “Boy or girl, learn then to dance. You will stand straighter, and walk prouder the rest of your life. You will be kinder, more polite, more exacting in all physical activities and less afraid.” – Agnes de Mille

She loved poetry and music (especially jazz and blues). An avid reader, saving articles and beautifully written passages to share and discuss, her granddaughters were often captive recipients. Jewel lived her life by the written word of God. She was an advocate for children with learning disabilities, thinking they were capable of extraordinary gifts.

Jewel was a member of many special organizations near and dear to her. They were the National Society of the Daughters of American Revolution, National Society of Colonial Dames XVII Century, National Society Magna Charta Dames, former board member of Bossier Arts Council and Keep Bossier Beautiful, member of Newcomer’s Club Shreveport-Bossier and former board member of USA Dance.

Jewel, or more affectionately known as our Gran-Gran, is survived by her daughter, Vicki Murray Fulghum and husband Hal; son, Mike Murray and wife Donna; granddaughters, Sara Fulghum, Shelly Windham and husband Joey, Melanie Fulghum, Megan Funderburk and husband Josh; great grandchildren, whom were the loves of her life, Peyton Fulghum, Parker Fulghum, Hannah-Kate Windham, Hadleigh Fulghum and Hunter Funderburk.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Murray; sister, Eunice Martin; brother, RB Martin; mother, Sarah Pate; step-father, Irvin Pate and father Redrick Martin.

The funeral will be held at Hill Crest Memorial Chapel on Wednesday August 9, 2017 at 4:00 pm. There will be a reception immediately following the funeral. Burial will be at Hill Crest Memorial Park.

The pallbearers will be Johnny Murray, Robert Hauser, Rod Reeves, Joey Windham, Roy Johnson and Josh Funderburk.
